It sits in the middle of a corridor, in a food court, in a public market hall, or on a counter inside somebody else’s store. People walk past it on both sides. There is no wall to hang anything on, no window to letter, and no single direction anyone approaches from.

That is not a smaller version of the same problem. It is a different problem, and almost nothing written for storefronts transfers to it.

What this guide does not cover

Two neighbouring subjects are deliberately left alone, and it is worth saying so early.

This is not about trade show booths or exhibition stands. Those are temporary structures in an event hall, read from across an aisle, with a tall backwall and a set of viewing distances of their own. If that is your situation, that subject has its own treatment and the numbers there do not apply here.

It is also not a guide to storefront signs. If you have a facade, the questions that matter to you are illumination, contrast against the building, and how much text fits above your door. Those are covered in the article on common storefront sign mistakes, and this guide will not repeat them.

What follows applies to a unit with no walls of its own, permanently or semi permanently installed inside a space owned by somebody else.

The unit is the sign

On a normal shopfront, the sign and the shop are two separate objects. You can redesign one without touching the other.

On a kiosk they are the same object. The structure, its finishes, its lighting, its shelving and the goods on it all read as one silhouette from twenty paces away. A customer forms an impression of your business before reading a single word, based on the shape and the colour mass of the unit itself.

This has a blunt practical consequence. Your brand cannot be added at the end, as a graphic applied to a finished structure. It has to be decided at the same time as the structure, because the structure is doing most of the communicating. A logo panel bolted onto a unit that was chosen for other reasons will always look like a sticker, and customers read it as one.

The operator stands in the middle of the sign

Retail kiosks are usually built to be entered from the middle, with the operator inside and customers approaching across a counter. That single fact undoes most conventional layout thinking.

It means a person is standing in the exact centre of your unit for every hour you are open. Whatever you place at eye level in the middle of any elevation is behind that person, or behind their shoulder, or behind the till. The centre of the unit is the least visible surface you own, not the most visible.

It also means the working level, roughly from the counter to just above head height, belongs to the operation and not to the brand. Bags, packaging, a card terminal, a queue of two customers and a staff member in a uniform occupy that band all day.

What is left is the band above head height and the band below the counter. The upper band carries recognition, so that is where the mark belongs. The lower band is seen only at close range by someone already standing at the counter, so it is where a short line about what you actually sell earns its place.

The landlord owns more of the surface than you expect

A kiosk is almost never installed on your own terms. Shopping centre operators publish design criteria manuals for these units, and Macerich, one of the large North American operators, is among those that make one available to prospective tenants.

We were unable to extract the text of that manual during research for this article, so no figure, threshold or specific requirement from it is stated here. What can be said without it is the shape of the thing, and it matters: these manuals typically govern the exterior materials of the unit, how much of its surface may carry brand colour and graphics, the lighting, and the signage elements. Approval sits with the landlord.

The design consequence is the part worth planning around. If a proportion of your unit has to be finished in neutral materials, then your brand is not going to live in a large field of your brand colour. It will live in a small number of high contrast moments: the mark itself, one accent, and the typography. A brand that depends on a saturated background to be recognisable will simply not be recognisable here.

Get your own centre’s manual before you commission anything. Two centres owned by different operators will not have the same rules, and the rules are not negotiable after the unit is built. Designing a mark that stays recognisable inside that kind of allowance is precisely the constraint our logo design service is built to work within.

Four elevations, and only one of them is ever seen head on

Because people walk past rather than towards a kiosk, most of your customers see it at a sharp angle. A mark placed flat on a vertical face is foreshortened to a sliver from thirty degrees off axis.

Three habits fix most of this.

Repeat the mark on all four elevations rather than treating one as the front. There is no front, and the elevation facing the main corridor at the moment you are photographed will not be the one facing it next season.

Favour a mark whose silhouette survives compression. A wordmark set in a condensed face is already narrow, so squeezing it further at an angle makes it illegible sooner than a compact symbol does. If your identity has a symbol that works alone, the kiosk is where it earns its keep.

Put something on the top surface or on a raised element. In a hall with high ceilings and a mezzanine, the plan view is a real viewing angle, and it is the one nobody designs for.

The unit moves, and your brand has to move with it

Kiosk leases are short. Terms run from a single weekend to a year, monthly arrangements are common, and holiday positions are priced at a premium. Smaller mobile units are often built on wheels, partly because fire regulations require clear distance between them.

So the thing you are branding is not a fixed address. It is a piece of furniture that will stand in a different corridor, under different lighting, beside different neighbours, possibly in a different city.

Design accordingly. Anything that refers to a specific location dates the moment the unit is moved. Anything printed as a single large graphic panel is expensive to replace and impossible to adapt. A set of separately produced elements, a mark, a header band, a price or product panel and a small identity plate, lets you change what needs changing without rebuilding the unit.

The same logic applies to your files. A unit fabricator will ask for artwork in production formats, and the request will arrive with a short deadline because the installation window is usually overnight. The article on which logo files to request from your designer sets out what to have on hand.

LOGO DESIGN

A mark that still reads when it is seen from the side

We design logos that hold up on the surfaces a small retail unit actually has: narrow bands, oblique angles, neutral materials and a small allowance of brand colour, and we deliver them in the formats a fabricator will ask for.

See the logo design service →

The two failures we see most often

The first is a mark that was drawn for a screen and has never been produced at size. Enlarged to the width of a header band, thin strokes disappear, tight counters fill in, and fine detail turns to mush. This is the same underlying problem described in the article on a logo that goes blurry on signs, and it shows up faster on a kiosk because the mark is reproduced large on four sides rather than once.

The second is a brand built entirely on a background colour. Take the coloured field away, as a neutral materials requirement often will, and there is nothing left that identifies the business. If your mark only works reversed out of a solid block, you do not have a mark, you have a panel.

Key takeaways

A kiosk has no facade, so the structure itself is the sign and the two have to be designed together.

The operator stands in the centre of the unit, which makes the middle of every elevation the least visible surface you own.

Recognition belongs above head height. Detail about what you sell belongs at counter level and below.

Landlord design criteria typically limit exterior materials and the share of the surface that can carry brand colour, so obtain your own centre’s manual first.

Customers approach at an angle, so repeat the mark on all four sides and favour a silhouette that survives foreshortening.

Leases are short and units move, so build the identity as separate replaceable elements, not one large printed panel.

A brand that only works as white on a coloured field will not survive a neutral materials requirement.

Frequently asked questions

Should the kiosk carry the same logo as the rest of the business?

Yes, and it should carry the same mark, not a special version drawn for the unit. What may differ is which element you lead with. A business whose identity is a symbol plus a wordmark will often lead with the symbol on the upper band and place the full lockup once, at counter height.

Is it worth investing in branding for a lease of only a few months?

The lease is short but the unit usually is not. Most operators of small retail units move between positions and centres for years with the same structure. What dates a kiosk is not the brand, it is a location specific message printed into a fixed panel.

How much text should be on a kiosk?

Less than you think, and split by height. One line above head height, which is the name or the category. One short line at counter level, which is the offer. Everything else belongs on the product, on packaging, or on a card the customer takes away.

What if the centre refuses my brand colour?

Treat it as a constraint on area, not on presence. Colour that cannot cover a surface can still occupy an edge, a returning face, a light, or the header band. A restricted allowance forces a stronger mark, which is usually a net gain.

Do these rules apply to a counter inside another business?

Most of them do, and one is stronger. A concession inside a host store shares the host’s lighting, floor and sightlines, and the host’s identity is the loudest thing in the room. Contrast with the host matters more than fidelity to your own palette.

What about an outdoor market stall?

The physical logic is the same, with two differences. Weather rules out several materials and finishes, and the structure changes shape between the packed and the open state, so the mark has to be legible on the open canopy and on whatever face is visible when the stall is closed.

{"@context": "https://schema.org", "@graph": [{"@type": "FAQPage", "mainEntity": [{"@type": "Question", "name": "Should the kiosk carry the same logo as the rest of the business?", "acceptedAnswer": {"@type": "Answer", "text": "Yes, and it should carry the same mark, not a special version drawn for the unit.
